Whatever the season, the first couple of hours after opening are consistently the calmest; the tapestry gallery in particular feels completely different with room to stand still in front of a hanging rather than shuffle past it. An early or late visit also means more room on the rampart walk to actually stop for the view.
Summer brings the day-trip crowds
May to early September is the busiest stretch, when day-trippers from Paris and the wider Loire valley overlap with the warmest weather. The château keeps longer hours through this period, which spreads the crowd a little, but the middle of the day, late morning through early afternoon, is still when both the tapestry gallery and the ramparts feel fullest. In heatwaves the ramparts can be closed, so a summer visit is best started early.
Spring and early autumn trade warmth for space
May, June and September tend to offer the best balance: mild weather, the gardens inside the walls in flower, and noticeably thinner crowds than July and August. Shoulder-season weekdays in particular are a good bet if your dates are flexible.
Winter is quiet, but the hours are shorter
From early September the château moves to its shorter hours, and daylight runs out earlier, so plan an earlier arrival if you're visiting between autumn and spring. In exchange, the ramparts and the tapestry gallery are at their calmest, and the fortress's bare stone reads differently under low winter light than it does in a July crowd.
